Why we built a different kind of currency broker
Cambridge Currencies was founded in 2023 on a simple belief: moving large sums across borders should be transparent, expertly guided and genuinely personal. This is who we are, what we stand for, and how we keep your money safe.

Founded in 2023 to fix a frustrating gap
Anyone who has moved a large sum abroad through a high-street bank knows the feeling: a poor rate you can’t see clearly, fees buried in the detail, and no one who can actually talk you through your options. The money-transfer apps fixed the price — but replaced the expert with a screen, leaving you alone with a decision that might be worth tens of thousands of pounds.
Cambridge Currencies was founded in 2023 to sit between the two. We pair the keen pricing and modern infrastructure you’d expect from a serious payments business with something the banks and apps have both let slip: a specialist who picks up the phone, learns your situation, and stays with you from first quote to final settlement.
We’re deliberately built for the transfers where that matters most — buying property abroad, inheritances, emigration, pensions and business payments — where rate, timing and structure all have to be right.
What we believe
The principles we won’t compromise on
Five things shape every conversation we have with a client. They’re the reason people come back, and the reason they refer others.
Plain English, always
We explain currency in language anyone can follow — no jargon, no acronyms left hanging, no assumptions about what you already know.
Guidance, never a hard sell
We’re here to help you reach a good decision, not push you into a trade. If it isn’t the right moment to move, we’ll say so.
One specialist, start to finish
The person who quotes you is the person who settles your transfer. You’re never passed around a call centre.
Pricing you can see
You see the rate and the cost before you commit. No hidden margins, no surprise fees in the small print.
Safety before everything
Your money is safeguarded by our FCA-authorised partners at every stage. We never hold client funds ourselves.
Built for the long term
Most of our clients come back, and many refer family and friends. That only happens if we get it right every single time.
Where we sit
Between the bank and the app
Banks are convenient but expensive on large transfers, and rarely give you anyone who’ll talk it through. Apps fixed the price, but left you alone with the decision. We built Cambridge Currencies in the gap between them.
Better value than the high street
Lower overheads than the big banks mean we can work to tighter margins — which can make a real difference on a large transfer.
Infrastructure you can trust
Your payments run on the regulated rails of established global payment networks, through our FCA-authorised partners.
A specialist, not a screen
Every trade is handled over the phone by someone who knows your situation — the part the apps quietly removed.
What you can always expect
- A named specialist on every transfer, start to finish
- A live, no-obligation quote you can compare against your bank
- Clear pricing, explained up front — no hidden margins
- Guidance shaped around your timing and goals, never a script
- Funds safeguarded by FCA-authorised partners at every stage
And what we’re not
- We’re not an app for sending £50 abroad — for small, instant transfers, others do that well
- We don’t give regulated financial, tax or legal advice — we offer currency guidance, and point you to the right professional when you need one
- We don’t hold your money ourselves — that sits with our FCA-authorised partners
- We don’t use pressure tactics or rate-bait — if it’s not the right time, we’ll tell you
Regulation & trust
How you can trust us with a large transfer
We’re transparent about exactly how we’re set up — and where the regulatory protection sits.
How our structure works: Cambridge Currencies is a specialist broker and does not hold client funds itself. We are not directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. Your payments are processed, and your funds safeguarded, by our FCA-authorised partners — Currencycloud (FRN 900199) and ScioPay (FRN 927951), both verifiable on the FCA Register. We provide guidance and specialist support, not regulated financial advice. Currency values can move quickly and exchange rates may change between quote and settlement.
FAQs
About Cambridge Currencies
Questions about who we are, how we operate, and how your money is protected.
Is Cambridge Currencies authorised by the FCA?
Cambridge Currencies is a specialist broker and is not itself directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. We work exclusively with FCA-authorised payment partners — Currencycloud (FRN 900199) and ScioPay (FRN 927951) — and all transfers are processed through their regulated infrastructure, with client funds safeguarded under UK regulations.
When was Cambridge Currencies founded, and where are you based?
Cambridge Currencies was founded in 2023 and is a UK specialist currency broker based in Cambridge. We work with clients worldwide, moving money to and from more than 190 countries.
Why do you only operate by phone?
It’s a deliberate choice, not a limitation. Large transfers involve timing, planning and detail where a short conversation prevents costly mistakes. Working by phone means there’s always a named specialist who knows your situation and is accountable for getting it right.
Do you give financial advice?
No. We provide currency guidance and specialist support — explaining your options, the tools available, and the trade-offs — so you can make your own informed decision. We don’t give regulated financial, tax or legal advice, and we’ll point you to the right professional when a question falls outside currency.
How is my money kept safe?
Client funds are held at a tier-one credit institution by our FCA-authorised partners and protected in the event of insolvency. We never hold client money ourselves. Safeguarding is a regulatory requirement for authorised payment institutions, and it’s central to how your transfer is protected from quote to settlement.
Who do you typically work with?
We support people buying or selling property abroad, expats and those emigrating, retirees receiving overseas pensions, private clients making high-value transfers, and UK businesses paying or receiving foreign currency — typically on transfers of £5,000 or more.
