What is the USD to AED exchange rate — and what will you actually get?

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725, a rate set by the Central Bank of the UAE and held since 1997. The AED/USD rate does not move. It will be the same tomorrow, next month and next year.

The rate is fixed. The margin is not.

Because AED/USD is pegged, there is no such thing as a good day or a bad day to convert — timing the market is not a lever you have. The only variable that decides what you receive is the margin your provider applies to that fixed rate. A UK or UAE bank typically takes 3% to 4%. A specialist broker typically works on 0.3% to 0.8%.

This makes the dirham unusual and, in one respect, simple: the entire cost of your transfer is the margin. Nothing else. On AED 1,000,000, a 3% margin costs AED 30,000 against roughly AED 4,000 at 0.4% — a difference of about AED 26,000, on a rate that cannot move against you.

Most people converting dirhams do not realise this. They watch the rate, see it never changes, and assume there is nothing to optimise. The opposite is true: because the rate is fixed, the provider is the only thing that matters.

Cambridge Currencies arranges payments through FCA-authorised partners — Currencycloud (FRN 900199) and ScioPay (FRN 927951) — with client funds safeguarded in line with UK rules. This is general guidance, not a personal recommendation.

What the margin costs on a large USD to AED transfer

A margin is a percentage of the amount, so this table holds true wherever the exchange rate sits. It compares a typical bank margin (3%) with a specialist margin (0.4%).

What moves USD/AED

The peg, not the market

The Central Bank of the UAE has held AED at 3.6725 to the US dollar since 1997. It is one of the world’s most durable currency pegs and there is no serious expectation of it being abandoned.

Why the peg exists

UAE government revenue is heavily dollar-denominated through oil exports. Pegging to the dollar removes exchange-rate risk from the state’s primary income stream.

What this means for you

There is no good day or bad day to convert dirhams. Timing gives you nothing. The provider’s margin is the entire cost of the transfer.

The dollar leg

On any AED cross other than AED/USD, all movement comes from the dollar’s rate against the other currency. Watch the Fed, not the CBUAE.

USD to AED — FAQs

What is the USD to AED exchange rate?

The live mid-market rate is shown in the converter at the top of this page and refreshes each time the page loads. It is a reference midpoint, not a dealable rate — what you actually receive depends on the margin your provider applies: typically 3% to 4% at a bank, against 0.3% to 0.8% at a specialist broker.

Is the UAE dirham pegged to the US dollar?

Yes. The Central Bank of the UAE has pegged the dirham at 3.6725 to the US dollar since 1997. The AED/USD rate does not float and has not moved in nearly three decades.

If the rate is fixed, does it matter when I convert?

Not for the rate — but very much for the cost. Because the peg removes timing from the equation entirely, the margin your provider applies is the only variable that decides what you receive. It is the whole game.

How much will the margin cost me?

It scales with the amount, because a margin is a percentage. On $250,000, a 3% bank margin costs roughly $7,500 against about $1,000 at a 0.4% specialist margin — a difference of around $6,500 on a single transfer.

Can I fix a rate for a future payment?

Yes. A forward contract fixes today’s rate for a transfer settling up to 12 months ahead, typically for a deposit of 5–10% of the contract value. It is commonly used for property purchases, tuition payments and business invoices with a known settlement date.

How long does a USD to AED transfer take?

Most transfers are sent via SWIFT and arrive within 1–2 working days once funds have cleared. Allow 2–3 working days on larger amounts to account for compliance checks.

Why is the rate I am quoted different from the rate on this page?

This page shows the mid-market rate — the midpoint between the buy and sell price in the interbank market. It is a reference, not a rate anyone can transact at. Every provider adds a margin to it. The mid-market rate is the same for everyone; the margin is not, and that is where the cost of a transfer actually sits.

How often is the rate on this page updated?

The rate is fetched live from the market data feed every time the page loads, and refreshes automatically while the page is open. The reference figures in the HTML are refreshed daily. We do not display rates older than that.
