Currency markets were largely range-bound early Friday as traders braced for a packed data calendar featuring the U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls report, Canadian employment figures, and a scheduled speech from ECB President Christine Lagarde.

USD Outlook: Eyes on Payrolls and Wage Growth

The U.S. dollar is holding steady, with EUR/USD at 1.1436 and GBP/USD at 1.3564, as investors await the Nonfarm Payrolls report at 12:30 BST. Consensus is for 130,000 new jobs, down from 177,000 in April. Average hourly earnings will also be closely watched, with markets pricing in 0.3% monthly growth.

A weaker-than-expected print could further weigh on the dollar, reinforcing speculation that the Federal Reserve could begin easing policy later this year. Conversely, a strong jobs number may reignite rate hike talk and push the greenback higher into the weekend.

EUR: Lagarde in Focus After Thursday’s Rate Cut

The euro has held onto post-ECB gains, with EUR/USD steady just below 1.1450. The ECB cut rates by 25bps on Thursday, but struck a cautious tone on further moves. Today’s Lagarde speech at 08:30 BST, followed by Q1 GDP and April retail sales at 09:00, will help shape expectations on whether Thursday’s cut was a one-off or the start of a broader easing cycle.

CAD: Jobs Data to Drive Next Move

USD/CAD trades at 1.3666, little changed ahead of Canada’s May employment report, also due at 12:30 BST. Expectations point to a 15,000 job loss and a rise in the unemployment rate to 7.0%. Any downside surprise could pressure the loonie further, especially after the Bank of Canada left rates unchanged earlier this week.

JPY & EMFX: Modest Moves in Cautious Trade

The yen weakened slightly, with USD/JPY up 0.23% to 143.88, reflecting improved risk sentiment. Emerging market currencies were mixed, with USD/MXN at 19.14 and USD/INR at 85.75, as traders await broader macro drivers.
