How Long Does an International Money Transfer Take?

Most international money transfers arrive within 1–3 working days, but the exact time depends on the method, the currency pair, and the cut-off you hit. Here is realistic delivery time…

5–8 minutes

Most international money transfers arrive within 1–3 working days. SEPA euro transfers complete the same day; SWIFT transfers between major currencies typically take 1–2 working days; specialist brokers can deliver same-day on trades placed before the daily cut-off. Transfers to less common currencies or destinations may take up to 5 working days.

Transfer time by method — quick reference

The method matters more than the corridor for most transfers. The table below shows realistic delivery times for a same-day instruction placed before the daily cut-off:

MethodTypical delivery timeBest for
SEPA InstantUnder 10 seconds, 24/7Euro payments within the EEA
SEPA (standard)Same working dayStandard euro payments within the EEA
Specialist broker (major pair)Same day to 24 hoursGBP/EUR, GBP/USD, larger transfers
SWIFT gpi (major currencies)30 minutes to 4 hoursCross-border bank-to-bank in major routes

What actually determines transfer speed

Six factors decide how quickly money lands in the recipient’s account. Most are within your control if you plan ahead.

  • Currency pair. Major pairs (GBP/EUR, GBP/USD, EUR/USD) have direct correspondent banking routes and settle fastest. Less common pairs route via the dollar, adding a leg.
  • Daily cut-off times. Most UK providers have a same-day cut-off around 2pm to 4pm GMT for outbound transfers. Instructions after the cut-off start processing the next working day.
  • Working days. International transfers do not process on weekends or local public holidays in either the sending or receiving country. A Friday afternoon GBP/USD transfer to a US bank can take until Tuesday to land.
  • Compliance checks. Larger transfers trigger enhanced due diligence. See our guide on how to send over £10,000 abroad for what to expect on documentation timelines.
  • Intermediary banks. Standard SWIFT transfers may pass through one or two correspondent banks. Each adds processing time and a small fee.
  • Beneficiary bank processing. The receiving bank’s own clearing window matters. Some banks process same-day; others batch incoming transfers overnight.

SWIFT vs SEPA — the two big international networks

SWIFT is the global messaging network used for cross-border bank-to-bank transfers in any currency. SWIFT gpi reports that around half of cross-border payments now settle within 30 minutes end-to-end and almost all settle within 24 hours, but standard SWIFT can still take 1–3 working days.

SEPA is the Single Euro Payments Area, covering 36 European countries. Standard SEPA Credit Transfers settle the same working day. SEPA Instant Credit Transfer settles in under 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a per-transaction limit of €100,000. From October 2025, all eurozone payment service providers must offer SEPA Instant.

For a euro payment within the EEA, SEPA is almost always faster and cheaper than SWIFT. For non-euro corridors, SWIFT is the default route.

Why specialist brokers are often faster than banks

Specialist currency brokers typically deliver same-day on major-pair trades placed before the cut-off, while high-street banks routinely take 1–2 working days for the same transfer. Three reasons account for the gap.

First, brokers operate dedicated payment infrastructure with direct correspondent relationships, often skipping intermediary banks entirely. Second, the trade is the entire business — not a side process inside a retail bank — so compliance queries get resolved within hours rather than days. Third, larger transfer volumes give brokers priority access to local clearing systems.

Anthony Bull, CEO of Cambridge Currencies, sees this play out routinely on property completions: “When the legal completion date is fixed and the funds need to land on the day, the difference between a broker and a bank is rarely about cost — it is about whether the money arrives in time. We routinely complete property-related euro transfers same-day where the same instruction through a high-street bank would settle two working days later.”

How to make your transfer arrive faster

  1. Send before the cut-off. Most UK providers cut off same-day GBP funding around 2pm. Initiate the transfer well before this for same-day delivery.
  2. Use the right method for the corridor. Euro within the EEA: SEPA. Major currency pair: specialist broker or SWIFT gpi. Cash pickup needed: a money services business.
  3. Have your account verified before you need to send. First-time onboarding can take a working day even with clear documentation. Open and verify the account in advance.
  4. Provide complete and correct recipient details. Wrong IBAN or BIC causes the transfer to be rejected and returned, often after several days. Double-check details with the recipient bank in writing.
  5. Choose a major currency pair where possible. Where the destination accepts both, sending in EUR or USD usually settles faster than sending in a smaller local currency.
  6. Use a gpi-enabled provider. SWIFT gpi shortens cross-border bank-to-bank payments meaningfully. Most large UK banks and specialist brokers are gpi-enabled.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an international money transfer take?

Most international money transfers arrive within 1 to 3 working days. SEPA euro transfers settle the same day, SWIFT gpi transfers in major currencies often settle within hours, and SEPA Instant settles in under 10 seconds. Transfers to less common currencies or destinations can take up to 5 working days.

What is the fastest way to send money internationally?

For euro payments within the EEA, SEPA Instant is the fastest at under 10 seconds, 24/7. For other corridors, SWIFT gpi or a specialist broker offering same-day delivery is the fastest realistic option for transfers above £1,000.

Why is my international transfer taking 5 days?

The most common reasons are: the transfer was instructed after the daily cut-off, it crossed a weekend or public holiday, the corridor uses a less common currency requiring intermediary banks, the receiving bank batches incoming transfers overnight, or compliance checks are still being completed.

How long does SWIFT take compared to SEPA?

SEPA standard transfers settle the same working day; SEPA Instant settles in seconds. Standard SWIFT transfers usually take 1 to 2 working days, while SWIFT gpi has reduced many cross-border payments to 30 minutes or less. For euro payments within the EEA, SEPA is almost always faster than SWIFT.

Do international money transfers work on weekends?

SEPA Instant and most money transfer apps process 24/7 including weekends. Standard SWIFT and SEPA transfers, and most bank wires, only process on working days in both the sending and receiving country. A Friday afternoon SWIFT transfer to a US bank typically does not land until Tuesday.

Can I get same-day delivery on an international transfer?

Yes, on major-pair transfers placed before the daily cut-off (typically 2pm UK time) using a specialist currency broker or SWIFT gpi-enabled bank. Same-day delivery is realistic for GBP to EUR, GBP to USD, and most major-currency corridors.

How long after the conversion does my recipient get the money?

Once the conversion is executed and the foreign currency leaves the provider, the recipient typically sees the credit within the same working day for major routes and same-day broker trades. For SWIFT routes without gpi, allow 1 to 2 additional working days for the receiving bank’s processing.

Speak to a specialist about timing

If your transfer is time-sensitive — a property completion, an invoice deadline, a tuition payment — talking to a specialist before you instruct is the simplest way to confirm exactly when the recipient will see the funds. Cambridge Currencies completes every transfer by phone with a dedicated FX specialist who will confirm cut-offs, route, and realistic delivery time. Request a quote for your transfer.
