HSBC is one of the most recognised banks in the world, and in the UK it’s one of the most searched when it comes to finding sort codes and banking details. Whether you’re setting up a domestic payment, receiving funds from overseas, or preparing for a large international transfer, having the right account information to hand is essential.

Here’s everything you need to know about HSBC UK sort codes, SWIFT codes, and how those details connect to international payments.

Does HSBC Have One Sort Code or Multiple?

HSBC operates with branch-specific sort codes, much like other traditional high street banks. HSBC Bank PLC has over 2,280 active sort codes across its UK branch network. Bank Code

All HSBC UK sort codes begin with the digits 40, which serves as the bank identifier. The four digits that follow identify the specific branch where the account is held. Bank Codes Finder

So there is no single universal HSBC sort code — the one you need will depend on which branch your account is registered to. The best place to confirm your own is directly through HSBC’s online banking or mobile app.

To give you a sense of how these codes look in practice, here are a few examples from branches across the UK:

Bristol (Patchway)40-04-00
Coventry (Binley)40-01-00

These are provided as reference examples only. Always confirm your own sort code directly through HSBC before making any payment.

How to Find Your HSBC Sort Code

There are several reliable ways to locate your specific sort code:

  • HSBC online banking or the mobile app — Log in and navigate to your account details. Your sort code and account number will be clearly displayed.
  • Your bank statement — Any statement from HSBC will list your sort code and account number.
  • Your debit card or cheque book — Many HSBC cards and cheques display account details, though always cross-reference with your online banking for accuracy.
  • Calling HSBC — You can reach the customer service team on 03457 404 404 to confirm your details if needed.

Key HSBC UK Banking Details

For international transfers, the following bank-level details are the most relevant:

DetailInformation
Sort Code Format40-XX-XX (branch specific)
Bank NameHSBC UK Bank PLC
Primary SWIFT / BIC CodeHBUKGB4BXXX
Head Office Address1 Centenary Square, Birmingham

Each HSBC branch has its own unique SWIFT code, but if you’re unsure of the branch-specific code, you can use the 8-character head office SWIFT code and your payment will still reach your account. Wise

HSBC and International Transfers — What to Be Aware Of

HSBC has a genuine international footprint that most UK banks simply don’t have. The bank offers international transfers in more than 20 currencies, with live exchange rates during market hours. HSBC For clients who already hold HSBC accounts in multiple countries, their Global View service allows linked accounts to be managed from a single login, which is a useful feature for people with a genuinely international lifestyle.

That said, for those making large one-off transfers — buying a property abroad, funding a business transaction, or moving a significant personal sum — the convenience of using HSBC doesn’t always translate into the best outcome financially.

When banks calculate the exchange rate for international transfers, it’s common for a markup to be added to the mid-market rate to create the retail rate offered to customers. Because this is a percentage charge, it can mount up quickly on higher value transfers — and it’s rarely broken out as a separate line item, making it easy to miss. Wise

Analysis of HSBC’s international transfer rates suggests the exchange rate margin typically sits somewhere between 1.5% and 3% of the total transfer amount. TopMoneyCompare On a £200,000 transfer, even the lower end of that range represents a cost of £3,000 absorbed quietly into the conversion — before any transfer fee is applied on top.

This is something I speak to clients about regularly at Cambridge Currencies. Many of them bank with HSBC and assume that because the bank has strong international infrastructure, they’re getting a fair deal on currency. The infrastructure is good. The rate, more often than not, is not the best available.

What the Transfer Limit Means in Practice

It’s also worth noting that HSBC UK allows transfers of up to £50,000 online or through the mobile app, and up to £10,000 by phone — with higher limits available to Premier customers. HSBC For anyone moving a larger sum, such as a completion payment on a property abroad or a business remittance, this cap means the transaction may need to be split or handled differently, which adds friction to what should be a straightforward process.

At Cambridge Currencies, there are no such restrictions on transfer size. We’re set up specifically to handle large international transfers, and we can move funds of any scale with the same level of personal service regardless of the amount.

A Better Approach for Large HSBC-Held Transfers

If your funds are sitting in an HSBC account and you’re planning a significant international transfer, the process typically works as follows. You keep your money in HSBC right up until the point of transfer. We at Cambridge Currencies agree the exchange rate with you — locking it in if appropriate — and provide you with our UK account details to send the funds to. From there, we convert and send the money to the destination account in the required currency, often faster and at a significantly better rate than HSBC would offer directly.

You don’t need to switch banks or open a new account. You simply use a specialist for the part of the process where it matters most — the conversion and transfer itself.

If you’d like to compare rates ahead of an upcoming transfer or want to talk through the process, get in touch with the team at Cambridge Currencies. We’re happy to walk you through it.
